Over the past decade, sliding doors have become the go-to choice for architects creating designs that bring in more light and space into their projects. Whether it is an extension, a renovation, or a self-build project, it’s easy to see the appeal - large panels of glass, slim frames, and seamless views of the garden. But as the demand for slim-framed doors has grown, so has the number of products on the market. And while those ultra-thin frames look fantastic, they can come with hidden risks that end-clients don’t find out about until it’s too late.

The problem with ultra-slim sliding doors

Edward Stobart, Technical Sales Manager at IDSystems, explains: “Traditionally, windows and doors use glazing beads that hold the glass securely inside the frame. But with some ultra-slim frames, there’s simply no room for these beads. To keep the profile as narrow as possible, some manufacturers now glue or permanently bond all four edges of the glass directly to the frame - creating what is known as a structurally bonded sliding door.” Structurally bonded doors are easy to spot - they’re the ones with extremely slim frames all the way around the glass. The catch? Because the glass is permanently attached to the frame, it can’t be replaced if it breaks - the entire panel, frame has to be changed.

Why that’s a costly problem

In most cases, a home insurance policy will cover broken glass - but it is unlikely to cover the cost of a brand-new door frame. And if the company that supplied your doors has since gone out of business, getting replacement parts might not even be possible. Edward added, “Over the past few years we’ve spoken to homeowners looking for help with broken glass who had discovered that their original door supplier had closed down and the system they had bought was no longer available. When they tried to replace broken glass, they were shocked to learn they’d need an entirely new door system - something they were never warned about before buying.”

The good news: there is a safer alternative

Not all slim sliding doors come with that risk. theEDGE2.0 IDSystems’ multi award-winning system combines narrow 20mm sightlines but is designed differently - the glass is still removable thanks to deeper outer frames and traditional glazing beads. That means if the glass ever needs replacing, it can be done easily and affordably, without damaging the frame or needing to take up patio slabs or your lovely kitchen floor to access the track.

The new Troldtekt® baffles present an elegant way to enhance room acoustics while respecting the existing architecture. The slim baffles are suspended vertically from the ceiling – giving the freedom to control the acoustics, visual expression, and even thermal indoor climate. Good acoustics are essential for well-being, focus, and comfortable conversation. Yet, in large spaces, a full acoustic ceiling is not always practical. In these cases, the new Troldtekt baffles provide a refined and flexible alternative.

Troldtekt baffles help create calm, pleasant acoustics in spaces with generous ceiling height – such as open-plan offices, retail spaces, educational buildings, and other areas where design and function must go hand in hand. Their slim, minimalist design in cement-bonded wood wool creates a light, transparent architectural expression that complements a wide range of interiors. "With the new baffles, we offer architects the freedom to design an acoustic solution that is both effective and visually integrated with an existing - or even heritage - ceiling structure", says Cécile Vassort, Head of Product, Marketing & Sustainability at Troldtekt A/S. "At the same time, we’ve made installation simple for contractors and installers through a range of flexible suspension methods – with an eye on using standard off-the-shelf components", she adds.

An effective sound absorber with an aesthetic design Each Troldtekt baffle consists of two 15 mm Troldtekt panels joined to form a slim 30 mm element. Suspended vertically, the baffles absorb sound on both sides, achieving a weighted sound absorption coefficient of up to αw = 0.55 – effectively reducing noise and improving speech clarity. The baffles can supplement existing wall or ceiling absorbers, or act as a stand-alone acoustic solution that maintains partial visibility of ceiling structures and services. As with all Troldtekt products, the baffles are made from certified wood (PEFC/09-31-030 or FSC® C115450) and cement – and produced at the company’s production facilities in Denmark. They are available in the following standard dimensions (30 mm thickness):

>300 × 600 mm

>300 × 1200 mm

>600 × 600 mm

>600 × 1200 mm

Easy to handle – multiple mounting options

Troldtekt baffles are easy to transport, stack, lift, and install – saving time and effort on site. Each baffle includes a visible aluminium top profile for simple, secure installation. The baffles can be mounted directly to the ceiling or suspended by wires, depending on the desired visual effect. "In buildings where materials such as concrete are used for their ability to absorb, store and release heat to reduce temperature fluctuations and reduce energy cost, acoustic ceilings cannot be used. Baffles are a great solution to create good acoustics while allowing airflow between the room and the exposed soffit, explains Cécile Vassort. She continues: "by adjusting the number, orientation, and suspension method, it is possible to find the right balance between acoustic comfort, airflow and design. We believe this solution will resonate with developers, architects, and contractors alike". www.troldtekt.co.uk
